Well, it's nice to know there are Better Place customers who are happy with their car and the service. But the elephant in the room is the rather high probability that Better Place will go bankrupt within a few months, leaving those customers high and dry. I find it very surprising that there is not one word in that article about BP's increasingly severe financial difficulties and mass layoff of employees, nor founder and former CEO Shai Agassi being fired by the company's board, and only passing mention of the slower-than-promised rollout of the swap station network.

 

In short, it appears BP paid someone to write an almost entirely positive "review".

 

Perhaps when it goes bankrupt, BP will let customers buy their current battery pack so they can still charge the car at home. But the ability to swap batteries and drive extended distances without stopping to recharge is almost certainly going to disappear.

Verdict

Overall, I'm very happy to have switched to an electric car as early as I did. I wouldn't be driving one today if it weren't for Better Place: I couldn't accept the range limitations without the kind of infrastructure we have in Israel.

An 85-kWh Tesla Model S is the only electric car that could have covered all but one of my journeys this year. But it costs far more than my Renault.

I've saved money, and I've more than enjoyed it: I honestly feel the car is worth more in this market than it costs today.

I wouldn't swap my car today for anything on sale in Israel.
