This discussion is about all things related to the oil industrywhich, hopefully, will diminish to a small size.It can't disappear completely since many products are dependent uponplastics, and…Continue
"Here are a couple of quotes from the "Hyperloop Alpha" white paper:
The inner diameter of the tube is optimized to be 7 ft 4 in. (2.23 m) which is small enough to keep material cost low while large enough to provide some…"
"Yes, I spend a fair amount of time with the white paper, but I was thinking it might be prudent to work with a 1/2 scale proof of concept. It would be fairly quick and straight forward (and reasonably cost…"
"I see references to water mains 3000 mm (3 meters) in diameter. I'm not sure even that is sufficiently large, but perhaps so. Keep in mind the Hyperloop is designed to have a gap between the outside of the pod and the inside of the tube, to…"
"Hey, Antiguajohn! I noticed you posted a comment to the Tesla: Gigafactory Tipping Point article on Seeking Alpha. There is another comment there, by the article's author, which is entirely on point to this subject you raised. Many (including…"
"A thermionic energy converter using single-layer graphene
The findings indicate that a graphene-based cathode thermionic converter operating at 900 K could reach an efficiency of 45%.
Based on the novel thermionic emission mechanism, the…"
I love what Tesla has done, they have delivered a kick in the nuts to the ossified auto industry to wake the lazy bastards up.
For too long major auto manufacturers have hewed to incremental improvements, rather than take a chance on…"
"For estimating purposes, if you used steel pipe, you'd likely be around 750 plf, at about $0.75/lb, so say $600/lf for the pipe material only. Any special structure would be on top of that. The would be lots of costs in…"
"So then the question is, how much does 5 miles worth of 2-meter diameter water main pipe cost? Seems like that would be a realistic cost floor. If it's $30 million or less then their stated fundraising goals may be reasonable.…"
"Large diameter watermain (2+ meter dia) work up to 10 bar pressure, 1 bar vacuum, so pressure is not an issue. Ductile iron, GRP, Steel, HDPE, PVC, RCP all work from a pressure perspective. It's the beam strength/structural…"
"Of course this is just a concept car, but still this is the first time I've ever read of an actual EV powered by lithium-sulfur batteries. I knew various companies (and, I think, university teams) were and are trying to develop practical…"
"For the basic tube, ignoring the expansion joints, there are two requirements:
(1) Strong enough to support their own weight plus the weight of any pods traveling thru the Hyperloop
(2) Able to withstand 1 atmosphere of pressure (14.7 PSI) with…"

"Most of our customers are just the average household. If you look at all the markets that have regrown, it's not the big homes; it's not the…"
I have applied for a Copyright. I do not have the where-withal to pursue a patent right now anyway, and the gist of my work is essentially the 2D design. I'm planning to get my prototype cut on an Epilog laser by some friends of mine. I've been investigating a photo etching process. I have done some small experiments in that vein, but my main worry is precision with the photo etching process. I lost almost all my work when my computer crashed over a year ago. Ive now reconstructed most of it. The last layout took a whole weekend to draw up, and was so complex it locked up CorelDrawX3 three or four times. Each time, I had to go back and start over with my last saved work. The vector graphic is more than 90 megabytes. There are eleven fractal iterations. It was approaching the physical limits of my printer and computer.
